SCIENTISTS SPECIAL ( SPECIAL SERIES -2 )

DE BROGLIE, PRINCE LOUISEVICTOR ( 1892 - 1987 )
He was a French physicist who put forth revolutionary idea of wave nature of matter.
RUTHERFORD, ERNEST ( 1871-1937)
He was a British Physicist, who discovered alpha - rays and beta - rays, created modern theory of radio activity, proposed the planetary model of atom & estimated the approximate size of the nucleus.
BOHR, NIELS HENRIK DAVID ( 1885 -1962 ).
He was a Danish physicist who explained the spectrum of hydrogen atom based or quantum ideas; & he gave a theory of nuclear fission based on the liquid - drop model of nucleus.
FERMI ENRICO ( 1901 - 1954 ).
He was an Intalian physicist who studied nuclear transmutations and discovered fermions. He developed the atomic pile and the first controlled nuclear chain reaction.
CURIE, MAIRE NEE SKLADOWAKA ( 1867-1934 ).
She was born in poland & recognized both as a physicist and as a chemist. She along with her husband isolated radium and polonium. She was the first person to be awarded two Nobel Prizes - for physics in 1903 and for chemistry in 1911.
S. CHANDRASEKHAR (1910-1995):
He was born in Lahore, India 1910. He was with the University of chicago, USA since 1937 after taking his education in India and Cambridge University, England. On the basis of his theory of white dwarfs, he derived the well-known Chandrasekhar's limit for their masses. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1983.
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543):
He was born in Poland. He studied medicine and law in addition to astronomy. His book is 'De revolutionibus orbium celestium'. By introducing his heliocentric theory of the solar system, revolutionized astronomy.
Edwin Hubble ( 1889-1953 ):
He was an American astronomer originally trained in law and was also good at athletics and boxing. He made an important discovery known as 'Hubble's Law. His indication of the existence of exchange of extragalactic nebulae initiated the study of the Universe beyond our galaxy.

SCIENTISTS SPECIAL ( SPECIAL SERIES-1 )

TESLA, NICOLA ( 1836-1943 ) :
The SI unit of magnetic field is named in his honour. He was yugoslov scientist, invented induction motor, the poly phase system of ac power and high frequency induction coil ( the Tesla coil ).
HERTZ, HEINRICH RUDOLF ( 1857 - 1894 ) :
The SI unit of frequency is named in his honour. He was German physicist who was the first to broadcast and receive radio waves. He also pioneered research on discharge of electricity through gases, and discovered the photoelectric effect.
BOSE, JAGADISH CHANDRA ( 1858-1937 ).
He produced in 1895, ultra short radio waves, He was Indian Physicist and plant physiologist He invented highly sensitive instruments for the detection of minute responses by living organisms to external stimuli.
JEAN - AUGUSTIN FRESNEL ( 1788-1827 )
He was a french engineer, who demonstrated two slit interference, explained the whole range of diffraction effects from all apertures and at all distances. He gave the general theory of light propagation in crystals; the motion of light in a moving. medium and much more.
JEAN - BERNARD FOUCAULT: ( 1819-1868 )
He was French experimenter who measured the speed of light in water and air accurately and supported Huygens Wave theory. He studied gyroscopic motions and demonstrated the earth's rotation by the change in the plane of oscillation of a pendulum.
ALBERT ABRAHAM MICHELSON: ( 1852-1931 )
He was a genius American experimenter who measured the speed of light with steadily improving accuracy over a long career. The experiment which he performed with Morley failed to final changes in the speed of light produced by motion with respect to the ether and thus laid the foundation for special relativity.
THOMSON, SIR JOHN JOSEPH: ( 1856 - 1940 )
He discovered the electron by his ingenious experiments on discharge of electricity through gases, He was a British scientist who investigated the nature of cathode rays.
CHRISTAAN HUYGENS ( 1629 - 1695 ):
He discovered the actual geometry of Saturn's rings. He was a Dutch physicist, astronomer, mathematician and the founder of the wave theory of light. His book is "Treatise on Light".
